About the SGA

The Scottish Gliding Association was reformed in 1986 and has no regulatory role but is an organisation to enable the Scottish clubs to work together for the benefit of the sport more formally than might otherwise have been the case.

It is the representative body for the sport in Scotland when dealing with government departments, with local authorities, and other statutory bodies, so far as it is not appropriate for the British Gliding Association to do so.

Specifically the SGA has:

• Been the point of contact for grants with Sports Scotland
• Negotiated written agreements with the National Air Traffic Service on procedures for entering controlled airspace
• Negotiated with the Cairngorm Partnership
• Operated the ASH 25 (The Scottish National Gliding Facility)
• Sponsored pilots for competitions and competition training
• Sponsored individuals for instructor training

In addition there is a programme of interclub competitions to promote friendly rivalry between the Scottish clubs.

The SGA is financed through a per capita charge on the member clubs and expenditure is on:

• The National Facility, a two seat training aircraft known as the “ASH 25”
• Sponsoring young pilots for competition
• Competition training
• Assistance to clubs for the training of instructors and coaches
